Somatic Experiencing, (SE), is a type of psychotherapy that works with your body’s nervous system to heal trauma. Bessel Van Der Kolk’s book, “The Body Keeps The Score” has gotten a lot of popularity and helped bring attention to this important topic. His book not just talks about but actually shows us how trauma manifests in the body, not just the story we tell ourselves and others about. We can change how we relate and what meaning we attach to traumatic events, but if the body’s nervous system is not addressed we will still experience the effects of trauma in many ways such as anxiety, depression, anger issues, and actual physical sensations felt even years after the event. It’s one thing to read about this work, it’s another to see in action, and even more so to actually feel the work as it is done.
So with that said, I thought it might be a good call to find something to show what an SE session can look like. While every session can be unique to a degree, and not every session is intense, seeing SE in action can be an experience. This is one the founder of it, Peter Levine, did. I will give this a bit of a trigger warning for those who might be uncomfortable with strong displays of emotion as they are released.
