EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is an evidence-based therapy developed by Francine Shapiro and has become a gold standard therapy for treating trauma and has also been shown to be effective for treating other conditions such as anxiety and depression.
Many of my clients have tried multiple types of therapy, read tons of books, watched videos, and yet still feel like something hasn’t been resolved yet. It can feel very draining to talk again and again about a problem that seems like it won’t go away, and it’s definitely not from a lack of effort.
While EMDR therapy was created using eye movements, it’s really about stimulating the brain hemispheres back and forth which helps us basically hack the brain in order to help change limiting beliefs that affect our thoughts and behaviors. Both touch and sound can be used in place of eye movements to create the same results.
EMDR is what got me into therapy and it had a huge impact on the quality of my life and I have seen it get impressive results for my clients. While it will not make you forget painful events in your past, it does “turn the volume down” on the intensity of those events. Even if the event happened decades ago, it can be healed. Oftentimes people get conditioned to believe they have to just accept and endure the pains of their past. EMDR can help change that. Permanently.
EMDR can be extremely powerful and sometimes emotions can be intense. What that being said, frequently my clients tell me they wish they did it years earlier. In fact, I told my own EMDR therapist that very thing after getting to put to rest some long overdue traumas. Call or schedule with me now to see if EMDR is right for you.
During an EDMR therapy session, I guide clients through a process that helps them reprocess distressing memories and experiences, which ultimately leads to healing. EMDR therapy is a powerful approach used to address a wide range of concerns, including:
